EDI Toolkit Bite Sized Guides - Principle 1: Organisational Commitment
The Diversity Forum's EDI toolkit is designed to assist signatories in enhancing their equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices. It helps social investment teams improve their EDI by identifying existing EDI initiatives and assisting in the selection and prioritization of actionable improvements.
To make this process more manageable and accessible, we're breaking down each stage of the EDI toolkit's self-assessment tool into bite-sized articles.
Our first guide in the series focuses on breaking down what you can do to focus on your Organisational Commitment.
Principle 1: Organisational Commitment
“We take ownership of our commitment to equity, equality, diversity and inclusion.”
This first step is about ensuring your Organisation truly prioritizes EDI. It's not just about having a statement, but making sure it's embedded in your mission, vision, and values.
Key questions to ask yourselves:
Have you clearly committed to EDI in your core documents?
Is your EDI statement realistic and does it acknowledge your Organisation's risk appetite and past mistakes?
Do you have specific, measurable EDI targets aligned with the Diversity Forum Manifesto?
What are the barriers to taking action on your EDI goals?
Do you have a robust EDI policy that covers all protected characteristics and has been approved by your board?
Does your EDI policy go beyond the basics and is it inclusive and reflective of your Organisation's specific needs?
Tips for Success:
Be honest and reflective: This is about taking stock of where you are and where you need to be.
Collaborate and get input: Make sure everyone in your EDI working group contributes to this discussion.
Don't just focus on the "what," but also the "how": Having a policy is great, but it's meaningless if it's not understood or implemented effectively.
Remember: This is the foundation of your EDI journey. A strong Organisational commitment is essential for driving meaningful change.
